Corona situation in Austria is worsening: Alarming numbers in intensive care units – new rules are taking effect
Is the pandemic situation in Austria getting out of hand? The number of corona intensive care patients increased significantly last weekend.
Austria – At the beginning of autumn, a delicate corona picture is emerging in some parts of Europe. In Austria the situation seems particularly alarming. Last weekend, the number of corona patients in clinics rose to a total of 191 people, which is a significant increase. On September 13 alone, seven new intensive care patients were added in 24 hours compared to the previous day. Around 13 percent of the available intensive care beds are currently being used by corona patients. The country’s Covid Commission is forecasting loudly oe24.de a further increase in occupancy. According to the news site, however, more than 90 percent of the intensive care corona patients are unvaccinated.
From Saturday to Sunday, the Austrian authorities registered a total of 1,857 new infections with the corona virus. According to the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES), the incidence is 159.4. In the federal capital Vienna, but also in the federal states of Vorarlberg and Lower Austria, the situation is particularly precarious. The corona situation seems to be getting worse in Austria – despite new measures.
Are Austria’s new corona measures coming too late?
Austria’s turquoise-green federal government announced new measures last week. A so-called “step plan” should form the basis for this. Different measures come into force depending on the capacity utilization of the intensive care beds in the hospitals. On Sunday, level 1 was already reached due to the precarious situation in the intensive care unit. From September 15, antigen tests are only valid for 24 hours in Austria, the 3-G rule already applies to meetings of 25 or more people. In addition, the FFP2 mask requirement is being extended again. There are also extra measures for unvaccinated people: They also have to put on a medical mask in stores, where it is sufficient for vaccinated people to wear mouth and nose protection even at level 1.
Corona rules in Austria: So far, so good – or not?
The supposedly clear announcements by the Austrian federal government are still causing displeasure. Because some things are not that clear after all. It is more than questionable who will die under the extraordinary FFP2 mask rule for unvaccinated people. The sales representatives referred to the police, who said they had better things to do. The political message also only seeps through in droplets. The controversial new mask measure for unvaccinated people is intended to motivate them to vaccinate. But this is usually not clearly communicated. The impression therefore arises that the Austrian government wants to please everyone. This also recently included a statement by Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz. He emphasized that there WILL be no more lockdown for vaccinated people. Even the city of Vienna was immediately taken aback and reacted indignantly.
Corona situation in Austria worsened: “The problem lies with the intensive care staff”
Now that the corona situation in Austria is slowly worsening again, the question of the real problem becomes loud. And the Austrian General Director for Public Health, Katharina Reich, has im Ö1 morning journal given a possible answer. You don’t just need a bed and a blanket, but also staff that have to be trained over a long period of time, said Reich: “That doesn’t just fall from the sky.” However, this deficit seems devastating in Corona times.
The bottleneck is with staff – we have more than enough beds, machines and rooms!
Vaccination against Corona: Germany with a trend-setting “action week”?
Things are going better in Germany at the moment. This is where the “vaccination week” announced by Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) started. At least five million other people should be encouraged to vaccinate. Associations, celebrities and a lot of advertising should play important roles.
