Comicdom Con Athens 2021: Costumes, wigs, moikes and sworn lovers of fantasy
Back in August and at the Tokyo Olympics, the Greek long jump Olympian Miltos Tentoglou, before climbing to the bottom to win the gold medal, made a special greeting, bending his knees and resting his fist.
Many tried to decipher this move, but the “initiates” quickly recognized it: it was Luffy’s “Gear Second”, or in other words, a characteristic move of the main character of One Piece, one of the most popular anime and manga of the ubiquitous otakus (those who love, that is, the culture of Japanese animation and comics).
Many such, but also all kinds of fans of comics and fiction, filled for three days (10-12 / 9) in the center of Athens. The reason was none other than the annual appointment of Comicdom Con Athens, which for the past 15 years has been making the Hellenic American Union for a few days and the surrounding area look like a big RPG game track.
The self-publishing track proved to be by far the most popular. Everyone was wandering among the small benches of the artists who greeted you and caught you talking with appetite.
This year Comicdom became (also) in its “outdoor” version, since for its popular bazaar it moved to Klafthmonos Square which became the central meeting point of the event.
Going to Marseilles on Saturday 11/9 in the morning, heading for the Hellenic American Union, things still seemed calm. Outside the venue were mostly parents with their young enthusiastic children, who were there for the main exhibition of this year’s Comicdom dedicated to the Smurfs. You were fooling the old dolls of Dracumel and Smurfette (but also the not at all “politically correct” cover from an old issue with “The Black Strufff”), while the little ones were wandering around the place holding their paintings.
As for the biggest friends of the comics, the opposite room was celebrating the “100 Years of Czech Comics”, where through the framed frames you could see the whole history of the country: World War II, communism, Prague Spring, everything passed in front of you from the 9th art.
A little while later, outside the building, a girl arrived with her face painted like the night sky. There was a small saving for what you will see for a while in Klafthmonas Square but also at night, in the cosplay competition, the “best seller” event of each event – after all, we saw this girl figure in the finalists of the competition.
The time is about one o’clock, but between the booths of the editions and the self-editions the first cosplayers have started to arrive, even if they still have hours ahead of them for the cosplay competition.
The self-publishing track proved to be by far the most popular. Everyone was wandering among the small benches of the artists who greeted you and caught you talking with appetite.
A little further on, a girl in a purple wig and a black cana was refreshing her make-up, a Naruto cosplayer was snacking on his breakfast and teenagers with unruly moikens were hanging around, I was fooling around with two music corners of self-publishing: The Comixtape by Konstantinos Sklavenitis, a comic with song illustration, divided into side a and side b, imitating cassette, but also the whole counter of Efi Theodoropoulou, which separates the music from the comics to the T-shirts she creates.
And since we are talking about music, the little observers did not take long to locate George Karanikolas of Last Drive behind the Tilt stand. “What, will I become famous?” he said sarcastically, when he saw our lens trying to immortalize it.
