Albert II of Monaco becomes the first head of state to fly an electric plane
Prince Albert II of Monaco has just completed a return flight between Nice Côte d’Azur Airport and the Principality of Monaco aboard an electric plane. A first in France.
The Head of State to take off from Nice at 9:30 am for a 30-minute flight to Monaco, which he will have been able to fly over without noise or CO2 emissions before returning to land on the Nice tarmac.
“The development of electric aviation must continue so that the flights of tomorrow can use the use of electric motors, whether they are powered by battery or by fuel cell”, he reacted to his descent of the plane, piloted by Raphaël Domjan, who made the first solar-powered round-the-world trip aboard the PlanetSolar catamaran.
Achieve carbon neutrality in 2030
“This device, which is no longer a prototype, has its place in airports such as Cannes or Saint-Tropez to be used by flying clubs for example,” explains Franck Goldnadel, chairman of the board of the Airports of the Côte d ‘ Azure. Supporting technological breakthroughs and anticipating future aviation needs for even stronger energy performance is our commitment for our territory and for future generations ”.
New measures, such as the elimination of gas in its terminals, the development of photovoltaic surfaces or the decarbonisation of special engines should allow the platform to aim for carbon neutrality in 2030.
In twenty years, Nice Côte d’Azur airport has reduced its emissions by 83%.
