September 9, 2021, Government Offices announced that the country would extend the deadline for British citizens and their families to apply for residency. According to the terms of the exit agreement between the United Kingdom and the EU, British citizens must apply for residence status or leave Sweden by 31 December 2021. British citizens are only entitled to apply for residence status if they and their family members moved to Sweden before 1 January 2021.
What are the changes?
Previously, British citizens and their family members had until 30 September 2021 to apply for residence status or formally legalize their stay in Sweden. According to this new announcement, individuals will have an additional three months to apply for residence status or stay in Sweden.
Looking ahead
British citizens and their family members must apply for residence status before 31 December 2021, otherwise the stay will be illegal.
