Austria is currently heading for a fourth corona wave – the government facility is therefore tightening the corona rules. What that means for a ski holiday.
Some people may already be thinking about a ski holiday in the Winter season 2021/22. Austria, in particular, is a popular travel destination for Germans – if it weren’t for the increasing number of infections, the government is dying forcing nuns to tighten corona measures. Shortly before this week, Austria’s Chancellor proposed a three-stage plan to contain the wave of infections. What is new is that you are immediately guided by the occupancy of the intensive care beds.
Stricter corona measures: Austria’s 3-step plan
Of the new step-by-step plan of the Austrian government provides for an initial tightening of the corona measures from 200 occupied intensive care beds. Therefore, stage 1 is already in force from September 15th step. From then on, the following rules apply:
- Antigen tests are only valid for up to 24 hours after the test has been taken
- FFP2 masks are mandatory wherever mouth and nose protection was previously provided. (Read more about the mask requirement in Austria here.)
- Wearing an FFP2 mask is mandatory for unvaccinated people in all retail outlets. Vaccinated persons are recommended to wear an FFP2 mask.
- The 3-G rule already applies to gatherings of 25 people or more (instead of 100 people)
- Control of the measures will be tightened
The measures of Level 2 come into effect seven days after 300 intensive care beds are exceeded:
- The 2-G rules (only vaccinated and convalescent) apply in night-time catering as well as in similar settings or gatherings without assigned seats with more than 500 people.
- Antigen tests for self-assessment are no longer accepted in terms of the 3G rules.
die level 3 comes into effect seven days after 400 intensive care beds have been exceeded and entails the following measures:
- Access restrictions are being expanded: Unvaccinated people & then submit a negative PCR test wherever the 3-G rule applies.

What do the new Corona rules mean for skiing holidays in Austria in 2021?
“The coming winter season will take place”, lead the Tyrolean state chief Günther Platter (ÖVP) in the course of the presentation of the new corona measures. The rules are also there to protect winter tourism in Austria from even more damage. “There shouldn’t be anything comparable anymore,” said the chairman of the Association of Austrian Cableways in the Chamber of Commerce and ÖVP member Franz Hörl, according to the portal Upper Austria News. Accordingly, the local cable cars would have last winter Sales losses of over 90 percent have to cope with. Erich Egger, spokesman for the Salzburg cable car industry in Den, reports something similar Salzburg news: “We lost 95 percent of our income in the previous year, I cannot imagine that we will open up again like this”.
According to Hörl, the coming winter season depends primarily on politics. He can hardly imagine 1-G, 2-G or 3-G rules for ski guests due to the difficult implementation: “With a normal ski lift, three tent parties would then have to be controlled”. Since around 60 percent of people are now vaccinated and the number of those recovering is also increasing, restricted measures are no longer “authorized”. “I also assume that it will be possible to increase the vaccination rate even further. The signs are better. I am optimistic about an acceptable winter season, ”says Hörl. (fk) * Merkur.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA.
