Many drivers have it on their windows: the motorway vignette for Austria. Quite a few tourists need the “sticker” to transit through the Alpine republic. It has now been announced what color the 2022 vignette will be and what it will cost.
Apricot is the new color of the sticker for the coming year. A digital version is available online in the web shop and via the ASFINAG app. Like the physical version, this digital vignette is available in three models: ten-day, two-month or annual vignette. They can be bought online, with the registration of the license plate there is no need to stick or scrape.
According to its own statements, ASFINAG is a 100 percent user-financed company. Like all toll revenues, the revenues from vignette sales will be reinvested in operation, construction, maintenance and road safety in the 2,249 kilometers of Austrian motorways and expressways.
In accordance with legal requirements, the vignette tariffs are adjusted annually to the harmonized consumer price index (HICP) and adjusted for 20 by 1.4 percent. Thus, the annual car vignette will cost 93.80 euros in the coming year and that for motorcycles 37.20 euros.
As always, the new vignette will be available in good time in the last days of November from around 6,000 ASFINAG vignette sales partners in Germany and abroad and will be valid from December 1, 2021.
The following sections in Austria are exempt from the vignette requirement:
- the A 1 West motorway toll route between the state border at Walserberg and the Salzburg North junction,
- the toll route A 12 Inntal Autobahn between the state border near Kufstein and the Kufstein-Süd junction,
- the toll route A 14 Rheintal / Walgau Autobahn between the state border at Hörbranz and the Hohenems junction and
- the toll route A 26 Linz autobahn (currently still under construction)
The annual vignette is gold-plated for 14 months as usual – from December 1 of the previous year to January 31 of the following year. Traditionally, motorbikes are cheaper than cars. Here is an overview of the 2022 tariffs:
