‘Outside Neighbourhoods’ during Open Monument Day Amsterdam
Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 September is Open Monument Day. 30 beautiful Amsterdam monuments open their doors for you for free. There are also 4 cycling and walking routes through the city.
Open Monuments Day is different this year than usual. The focus is not on the center, but on the municipalities that Amsterdam took over 100 years ago. The theme is therefore: ‘Outside Neighbourhoods’.
4 times as big
In 1921 Amsterdam became 4 times as big and we got 36,000 new Amsterdammers. The reason for this urban expansion was the strong economic rise in the 19th century. This creates the number of inhabitants of Amsterdam and that for a great lack of living space. As a solution to this problem, the municipality of Amsterdam attracted 5 neighboring municipalities to the city.
30 monuments to visit for free
During Open Monument Day you can visit 30 monuments for free. For a number of monuments you must make a reservation via amsterdam.nl/openmonumentendag. We ask that you wear a mask during your visit.
Cycling and walking routes
We have also set out 4 cycling and walking routes so that you can get to know the neighboring municipalities in a beautiful way: Nieuwer-Amstel, Buiksloot, Nieuwendam and Ransdorp, Sloten and Watergraafsmeer. You can find the routes on amsterdam.nl/openmonumentendag.
