Combination of reproduced music and live announcements in different languages. This is what the beginnings of Radio Praha, now Radio Prague International, looked like. Czech Radio’s regular foreign broadcasts began on August 31, 1936 at 10 a.m., ie 85 years ago.

The jingle history of Radio Praha is not long: Novosvětská, Forward left, Novosvětská.

Or according to the authors of the melodies: Antonín Dvořák, Jan Seidel, Antonín Dvořák.

Radio Prague International celebrates its 85th anniversary. Listen to the post is an archive audio

This is how editor Julo Horváth recalls the beginnings of the stations: “When we started the transmitter in 1936, I came only then in 1937, it was a big commotion in America among our compatriots. The foreigners also wrote to us and were looking forward to the appearance of a new shortwave station on the air with a very attractive program. “

The young small democratic state between Germany and the Soviet Union needed a tool against Nazi and Soviet propaganda. And that was Radio Prague.

“You know, the most beautiful were the bands of songs with an accompanying orchestra, say 10 to 12 songs, each of which followed each other, and it was sung by opera artists – Czech, often Slovak. We received the greatest response for that, “adds Horváth.

In 1937, Radio Prague received 14,000 letters. The response was not always written, as evidenced by one of the witness’s archival testimonies: He thanked him for the joy of the report from his old home. “

„V loňském roce naše webové stránky radio.cz navštívilo rekordních 7 800 000 lidí a počet zhlédnutí překročil 13 milionů,“ přibližuje.

Na vlnách stanice znělo v minulosti mnoho nejrůznějších jazyků, včetně arabštiny, svahilštiny anebo esperanta.

Aktuálně Radio Praha vysílá v šesti jazycích: anglicky, německy, francouzsky, španělsky, rusky a česky.
