New cracks in Gónhóli
New cracks are now visible in Gónhóli near the volcanoes at Fagradalsfjall. They have been formed in the last two weeks.
These are probably tension cracks that are most recently forming in Gónhól in the direction of the magma tunnel, southeast of the main crater, it is said. website of the Meteorological Office of Iceland.
The area, which was a popular lookout point at the volcanoes, is now covered in lava and only accessible by helicopter.
Several theories have been mentioned about what causes the cracks, to form small earthquakes, which subsequently reduced the magma pressure or the lava surrounding the hill.
Constantly monitors developments
It cannot be ruled out that the crack formations are a sign that magma is moving closer to the surface at Gónhól. If she does, expect the cracks to slide further and see gas and vapors rising from them.
Under such conditions, it is not advisable to be on Gónhóli, and the Norwegian Meteorological Agency advises helicopter pilots who land there to exercise caution.
“If it happens that new fissures open on Gónhóli, it will not have a decisive effect on the previously published scenarios about the progress of the eruption. The Norwegian Meteorological Agency, like in recent months, is constantly monitoring the development of issues at the fire stations,” says the website.
