WorldPride in Scandinavia
IN AUGUST IS it set for WorldPride 2021 in Copenhagen and Malmö. This is the first time a WorldPride festival is being held in Scandinavia. This year is also the first time WorldPride and EuroGames are being held in the same city.
WorldPride 2021 took over the baton after New York which in 2019 had more than five million participants. This year’s festival is thus set to become the largest queer event ever held in Scandinavia, and the program with more than 100 program items promises to be wide-ranging.
The audience can look forward to art exhibitions, drag shows, performances, workshops, lectures, social arenas, debates, and of course opening and closing ceremonies in both Copenhagen and Malmö.
The raisin itself in the queer sausage will be Malmö’s World Pride Park in Folkets Park and Copenhagen’s WorldPride Square on Rådhuspladsen. These queer social oases will have their own food stalls, cafes and stands.
The Glyptoteket and the National Museum in Copenhagen contribute with quirky theme exhibitions. Fluid Festival on the square Gammel Strand in Copenhagen will be a meeting place and a celebration of women, gender gays and non-binaries. Malmö has arranged for the youngest at Youth Pride, a separate room with, among other things, seminars, workshops and lectures for those between 13-19 years. Throughout the festival, the Human Rights Forum in Copenhagen will also contribute with a comprehensive human rights program with a number of talks and lectures.
In Fælledparken north of Copenhagen city center, it will be concerts, both physical and digital, in the open air. During the event Under the Rainbow on Thursday 18 August in KB Hallen and Fælledparken, the spotlight is on young LGBT + talents from Denmark, Sweden and the world. While Copenhagen’s iconic Drag Night will be held at the same place, Friday 19. August.
Why not get married once you have the Pride celebration? In Malmö, you can give yourself throughout the festival period, while Copenhagen celebrates WorldPride participants on 20 August. It does not matter if you are a Swedish, Danish or foreign citizen: Anyone who wants to say “yes” is allowed.
According to Danish guidelines at the time of writing, 5,000 people can attend the largest events with corona passes. In Sweden, the situation is somewhat more uncertain. The official festival guide is out in mid-July.
WorldPride 2021, from Thursday 12 to Sunday 22 August, Copenhagen and Malmö.
