With new cars on Petřín in 2023. Prague is launching a competition for designers
The estimated cost of the reconstruction of the line, stops and purchases of new cars is approximately 210 million crowns.
Dopravní podnik hl. m of Prague (DPP) and the city of Prague are jointly preparing a complete reconstruction of the cable car on Petřín. The appearance of the new cable car cars will emerge from the design competition that the city is currently preparing. Preliminary consultations with potential candidates are now beginning.
“Due to the obsolescence of both track and wagon technologies, the repair should be completed within five years at the latest. However, it is assumed that the first passengers could take the new cable car by the end of 2023, “ it is written in the documentation to start the market research.
According to the city and DPP, the purpose of the market research is to provide design studies with basic information about the upcoming competition, to find out their potential interest and to estimate in advance the expected hourly requirements for the study (design) of cable cars.
The competition itself should be announced in September, the contracting authority has set aside 1.5 million crowns for the price. The winning design will then become part of the documentation in the tender for a manufacturer of two vehicles, which has a minimum service life of 25 years.
The transport capacity of each car must be at least 100 passengers, which corresponds to today’s situation (25 seats and 75 standing). However, the DPP prefers to increase capacity to 120 passengers. The main subject of the competition will be the design of the car’s body and interior.
The existing infrastructure of the cable car dates back to the first half of the 1980s, the cable car started up again in 1985 after a twenty-year break. The cars were made by Vagónka Studénka. According to a diagnostic study, which also includes experts from the Czech Technical University, the lifespan of the cable car is a maximum of 4 to 5 years.
The estimated cost of the reconstruction of the line, stops and purchases of new cars is approximately 210 million crowns.
