Subway traffic until the morning? The idea for a night flight was here ten years ago. But there was no interest in them
In response to the gradual increase in the number of passengers, especially after 8 pm, it will be possible to take the metro slightly after midnight. The connections will be added from Thursday, July 15. The last daily metro connections will leave the center of Prague between 00:02 and 00:08, depending on the line and station.
The transport company (DPP) came up with a report on the extension of the metro operation on Thursday. A day later, the metro intervals in Vienna were extended. In the Austrian capital, the underground runs even after midnight. The metro lines are open 24 hours a day on Friday and Saturday nights and on the night before the public holiday. At night, connections in Vienna run every 15 minutes. “Before the arrival of the coronavirus, the night metro was a solid and important part of Vienna’s nightlife,” said Vienna Transport Council Councilor Peter Hanke.
The first night trains departed in Vienna on September 4, 2010. In about ten years – until a forced break – the evening trains, according to the town hall, covered 670,000 kilometers and carried around 58 million passengers. The daily Metro therefore asked the Prague transport company whether it was also considering a night metro. “In the past, about ten years ago, the metro ran on Friday and Saturday until 1:30 at night, and at that time, in addition to the municipality and the transport company, there was also a discussion about the introduction of overnight metro operation on these two days. In the end, the project was not launched because the metro is only able to perform maintenance, cleaning of tunnel stations and other work that requires a longer shutdown in operation at night when it is not running, ”Daniel Šabík, head of the DPP communication department, reminded the Metro daily. According to him, by prolonging the operating time and shortening the time for maintenance and cleaning, there would be a risk that it would not be possible to implement it in full in the remaining time. “At the same time, it proved that the use of connections during extended operation was low,” added Šabík.
