The Central Bohemian Region is changing plans to stop local traffic. He wants an end on 9 lines, on 4 he will restrict traffic
According to the resolution of the transport committee, the region is to examine whether train cuts will actually save so much.
The Central Bohemian Region has slightly revised its plans to reduce traffic on some railway lines in the region, where there is a shortage of passengers. A complete stop applies to nine lines, on the next four there will be a significant reduction in traffic. The plan was announced on Tuesday by the Central Bohemian Committee for Transport.
The region cuts in detail the lack of funds and the lack of perspective on the lines. According to the region’s analysis, stopping or restricting traffic should save 86 million crowns a year without deteriorating transport services. The final decision must be made by September, when the deadline for the final ordering of capacity for the new timetable.
The key to the choice was the occupancy of the tracks: the list includes those with less than 2,500 passengers a week. It was pre-pandemic data. “I am convinced that it does not make sense to run a train too much on such lines if there is a variant of a bus connection,“Mobility Councilor Petr Borecký (STAN) said in an interview for Zdopravy.cz in May.
Compared to the original list, there were some changes: the connection Lužná u Rakovníka to Žatec disappeared from the list of lines for decommissioning, on the contrary, the section of the line from Prague to Dobříš, specifically its last part from Čisovice, is now on the list. The first route in this timetable will be on the line from Čelákovice to Mochov, one of the symbols of throwing out regional money.
Municipalities can pay for trains themselves
The region began touring the villages affected by the reduction. According to Borecký, she offered them the opportunity to operate the preserve if she paid for it. For the first time, he also published data on the occupancy of individual lines, which are to be disrupted.
Borecký has previously stated that he is behind the disruption of the operation. “I didn’t go into politics so I could just do popular things. The lack of money in public transport is great and we cannot afford to pay for trains that carry a few people a day, “He added.
According to the chairman of the Transport Committee, Ondřej Lochman (STAN), its members took note of the material and asked the councilor to answer several other questions. They concern, for example, the analysis of variable and fixed costs for individual lines. “In other words, somewhere the savings of trains can be canceled very small, because the vehicle, which is now used for other performances, has disappeared from the track and only diesel and the driver’s salary will be saved. At the same time, we are waiting for a discussion with the mayor on the individual lines. The material was criticized, for example, by Roman Štěrba, head of the concept and strategy department of the Railway Administration, nominated by the YES 2011 movement. It is clear that this is a politically unpopular measure. Although the Minister of Transport likes to take photos on the premises, he refuses to pay us for the operation of the trains on them. The region thus has no choice and is pushed to cancel the lines, “ said Lochman.
