The Fed Cup final could be played in Prague. Kaderka acts, Krejčíková is in favor
The final tournament of the Billie Jean King Cup, ie the former Fed Cup, could move to Prague. The head of the Czech Tennis Association, Ivo Kaderka, said on Monday that he was negotiating with the management of the International Tennis Federation (ITF). It should be clear by the end of June.
The final tournament of the women’s competition was to take place in Budapest, but was canceled last year and was postponed this year due to the coronavirus situation. The Hungarian capital is held in May at a distance.
“We are very serious and serious about the ITF and we are ahead of the decision. We have to announce by the end of June whether Prague will take over the organization from Budapest, “said Kaderka on Monday, the winner of the singles and doubles at Roland Garros, Barbora Krejčíková, arrived in Prague.
In addition to the Czech team, Australia, Belarus, Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland and the USA are to start in the finals.
“It would be a fairy tale if the world finals took place in Prague. I called Báře (Krejčíková) and asked: Do you want the Fed Cup in Prague? She said yes. It is not unrealistic, I have been negotiating with the head of the ITF for several weeks now, “said Kaderka, who also met Dave Haggerty at Roland Garros.
The new Czech star Krejčíková was happy with the possible Fed Cup final in the Czech Republic. “It was beautiful. I would like it to happen, “she said, remembering how her doubles partner Kateřina Siniaková won the finals against the Americans in 2018 at O2. “It was an incredible experience of how people supported us and what the atmosphere was like,” said Krejčíková.
If it lasted in its current form until the autumn, Krejčíková could be the heroine. “It would be a great honor to represent and win the last point. It would also be a dream come true to be the leader of the Czech team, but I am not in that situation now and we will see how it develops, “said Krejčíková.
According to Kaderka, the final tournament could be played in the 44th week of the year, ie from 1 November.
The Fed Cup was renamed the Billie Jean King Cup last year in honor of the 12-time Grand Slam winner and fighter for gender equality and social justice. The prizes for the winning tournament participants also increased by $ 18 million.
Czech tennis players are the most successful team in the competition of the last decade, since 2011 they have won six of their eleven trophies. The remaining five titles were won by Czechoslovakia. He last won the silver cup after the final in Prague in 2018.
