Do you know where the center of Prague is? From today you can go on a trip there, you can find it in Prague 3 in the Balkans
The inscription on the bollard in Žižkov was sprayed on Friday by the mayor of Prague 3 Jiří Ptáček (TOP 09) and the director of the Institute of Planning and Development (IPR) Ondřej Boháč, who is also the author of the idea for marking the Prague poles. If people go around all four places and take pictures with them, they can pick up a badge at the IPR gatehouse.
“The main goal was to entertain people. I always think that the navel of Prague is Prague 3 and now we have it calculated on a grain of sand. I really liked the project of marking the poles of Prague and Ondřej Boháč then kicked me by telling me that the center is coming to us in the Balkans, “said Ptáček.
The city center is at the intersection of the Prague poles
“There are many ways to determine the center of an irregular body like Prague, but this is the intersection of the pole links. It is the only one of these ways where it is a public place. That’s why we chose him, “said Boháč.
The marking in the middle follows the already marked poles of the city, ie the farthest body. The idea arose during a lockdown due to the covid-19 pandemic. “They told us to stay as far away from people as possible, and at the same time not to cross the district line. So I decided that we would go around the most extreme body with the children. I put it on Facebook and people wrote to let me give them that there too, so we finally marked the columns, “said Boháč.
All four Prague poles are in public places. It is not only the West Pole, where the farthest point of Prague extends into the airport complex, and the East Pole, where it is moved approximately 50 meters closer to the tourist route on the basis of requests from the town halls of the surrounding municipalities. The reason was that wild boars began to appear in Úvaly on the square, which, according to the locals, frightened tourists from the forest walking to the pillar marking the east pole of Prague.
