Prague Zoo: Construction of a gorilla pavilion in full swing! look at
“The new pavilion will be a top facility built beyond the standards of the European breeding program and, of course, our male Richard will also move here. Visitors will travel to Central Africa when visiting the pavilion – their journey will begin in the Cameroonian countryside and gradually find themselves in the distant rainforest overlooking the gorillas., “Described the director of the zoo Miroslav Bobek.
The project includes a building measuring approximately 56 by 56 meters, an enclosure with ponds, an African school-style room and an outdoor viewpoint. The mostly ground-floor building should blend in with the surrounding environment as much as possible, including the green roof dotted with temperate plants. Inside the pavilion, there will be imitations of trees consisting of a shotcrete structure, illusory paintings and interactive elements for children. A completely new entrance to the zoo will also be created at the pavilion. The rough construction has already been completed, now it is necessary to install all the technologies, interior equipment of the expositions, facilities and visitor parts. In addition to lowland gorillas, the new pavilion and enclosures will also be inhabited by mantle guerrillas, vertebrates or Egyptian fruit bats.
This is what the gorilla pavilion will look like.

Outside the floodplain
The exhibition, which the Strabag company has been building at the top of the zoo since the autumn of 2019, is located outside the floodplain. The zoo decided to build a new pavilion due to the experience of the floods in 2002 and 2013. The current pavilion is in the lowest part of the garden, which was flooded during the floods of 2002 and when a male gorilla died. During the floods in 2013, the zoo moved the gorillas to a flood tower and the breeders went to feed them in a boat. “It is impossible to adequately protect the existing Gorilla Pavilion from large waters. Gorillas have been moved to the flood tower and from there their evacuation would have been extremely risky, if not impossible., “Bobek described.
There is currently a group of gorillas in the Prague Zoo, and they are already preparing to move. “Animals have been moving to migration since last year. Breeders will be the biggest support for the gorillas in the new environment, the entire existing breeding team will move to a new pavilion, “said Pavel Brandl, the curator of mammal breeding.
The Prague Zoo is one of the most visited places in the capital. Due to the forced restriction caused by government measures against the spread of covid-19, the Prague Zoo estimated a drop in revenues of about 40 million crowns in March.
