Prague has withdrawn from the expansion of part of the Industrial Semicircle, and continues to count on tunnels in Hloubětín
Industrial modifications have extended other lanes to bring better permeability for pedestrians and cyclists.
The Prague City Council withdrew from the plan to expand part of the Industrial Semicircle in Malešice by two lanes. City spokesman Vít Hofman told ČTK that the changes in the plan were based on a new study and the construction of a tunnel between Poděbradská and Kolbenová is still planned.
Due to the modification of the municipality, withdraw the original application for the environmental impact assessment (EIA) of the buildings, which will be submitted again after the completion of the project. The industrial semicircle is a four-lane road consisting of Kbelská and Průmyslová streets, which connects Letňany and Štěrboholy in the east of the metropolis. Back in March, Prague sent revised documentation for assessment.
The main change compared to the original plan is the abandonment of the widening of the road by one lane in each direction in the section between the Štěrboholská radial and the intersection with Českobrodská Street. “The new design contains only partial modifications of the intersections to improve the flow of traffic and the original state with 2 + 2 lanes is left here,” the spokesman explained. In the original version, it was planned to expand to 3 + 3 lanes.
Better entry for cyclists and pedestrians
Hofman added that the modified project still envisages the tunneling of the intersections with Poděbradská and Kolbenova streets and the road between them. “In other parts of the Industrial Semicircle, the new studio again envisages only partial modifications, especially at intersections. The whole study places great emphasis on improving the permeability of the whole area around the Industrial Semicircle for pedestrians and cyclists,“ added Hofman.
After completing the study, according to the spokesperson, the city will again apply for an EIA assessment for the tunnel section. “In other parts, the impact of the proposed modifications on the environment in terms of traffic load will be negligible. On the contrary, there should be a major improvement in the whole area in terms of permeability for pedestrians and cyclists. “ he explained.
According to Hofman, the designers will submit a study of the parts of the semicircle between Malešice and Hloubětín with the town halls of Prague 9 and Prague 14 in the near future. The spokesman added that less demanding modifications could start next year, but it will depend on the speed of the construction procedure and the choice of construction company.
