A wooden building on the outskirts of Prague was a clear choice for a Canadian-Czech couple
For a Saxon-Czech couple, a wooden building was a matter of the heart, and the land near Prague already had a building permit, so everything proceeded very quickly. This is despite the fact that the family wanted some alterations to the Iso-Kajastus model house.

For example, the floor area of the house is from the usual 180m2 increased to 210 m2so that each child can have their own room and the grandmother who lives nearby also had her privacy in the house.
The family of the client does not hide their sympathy for wood as such, they brought a lot of wood catches to their new house from their travels and previous residence in Dubai. And it is clear that after their stay in Dubai, they really missed this material, and the Canadian roots could not be overlooked.
Wooden building blocks for adults
In just four weeks, the contractor, Kontio, will complete the rough construction. Its wooden houses require precise construction plans, which are a condition for the preparation of individual beams cut to millimeters and marked with a bar code, so that a certified construction team under the leadership of the construction manager can complete the final form in a few weeks.
Thanks to this planning, the house is being assembled from prefabricated beams with precise profiles and intelligent joint solutions such as construction from a Lego kit. When planning, you just need to think carefully about the electrical wiring. The holes for them are prepared during the production itself. Builders do not have to modify, drill or cut anything. Water and waste are conducted in so-called installation walls.
In this case, the ground-floor timber perimeter structure consists of glued prisms, the inner partitions are columnar with a cladding of log panels with the same design as the beam wall, so that they act as if they were also beams.
The floor also has a columnar construction and identical cladding. The house has underfloor heating and as an additional source of heat, the owners chose a comfortable gas fireplace lined with slate. The roof is equipped with Lindab sheet metal roofing. The predominant building material in the house is, of course, wood, but it can also be connected to masonry structures, concrete or plasterboard without any problems.
Layout of the house
The main facade of the house is oriented to a quiet garden. The building has a cathedral ceiling open to the gable. From the spacious living room connected to the kitchen and dining room, you can enter the garden through two sliding glass portals.
The main entrance to the house is from the street and leads through a grassy front garden. On the ground floor you will also find a guest room with a bathroom, which is used mainly by the children’s grandmother during their visits. The illuminated gallery on the first floor non-violently connects the two floors and makes the house more compact and accessible for family interaction.
Behind the role in the kitchen there is a corner of the owner’s pride, his “barist corner”.
But back to the ground floor: the gourmet specialty of the kitchen is an increasingly popular barist corner, if you want a “coffee corner”, where the owner pursues his hobby and prepares himself and visitors a delicious coffee.
All professional equipment, including the supply of filtered water and waste, is hidden behind an inconspicuous blind. Children most often “disappear” to the floor where the self-supporting staircase takes you, because they have their three rooms there.
The floor also has a children’s bathroom with bath and parents’ bedroom, also with private bathroom. The undeniable advantages of this half-timbered house near Prague include a beautiful view of the countryside and low traffic on the surrounding roads.
Home scented with wood
Thanks to the natural ability of polar pine to optimize air humidity, the indoor climate in the log house is clean, fresh and thanks to which it also retains its scent beautifully. In addition, wood has been shown to have a calming effect on the human psyche and acoustically a very friendly material.

The beautiful visual structure of pine wood creates a unique atmosphere and an inspiring environment for life, work and relaxation. Although wood has a lower heat storage capacity, the speed of space heating and the fact that it feels up to two degrees warmer than brick or stone speak for it.
Wood is to keep the interior ideal humidity in the range of 30 to 55 percent. There is so much less dust, bacteria and viruses in the house. Although Kontio offers many standardized houses, up to 95 percent of the production is designed designed houses.
