The tenth city district has long lacked facilities for children and adolescents who are at risk of socially undesirable phenomena. This is the kind of social service that is emerging here. The first clients will be able to visit the community center in the middle of this year.
Psychotherapist Petra Wünschová: Children will not just knock out of the coronavirus crisis
“Although there are similar facilities in the Republic of 250, in our part of the city, which is home to almost 110,000 inhabitants, none have worked so far. At the same time, as part of community planning of social services from parents and organizations for the summer, it was heard how much such a service is missing, “said Councilor Michal Kočí (Pirates), who is in charge of the social services in the city district.
A new building was built
The place for the club was found in the area between Botič and the Lokomotiva Vršovice sports ground in the area of the former kindergarten. According to Councilor Kočí, it was originally planned to reconstruct the kindergarten building, but due to the extremely poor technical condition of the building, it was started with its demolition and construction of a new building. The implementation took place from September 2019 to the end of January this year and totaled 15.7 million crowns.
The year of distance learning became more expensive for parents
The club will be run by the world youth organization YMCA, which emerged from a tender announced by the City Hall of Prague 10. The YMCA already operates two similar facilities in the capital. It is expected that up to thirty children can walk through the Vršovice Community Center every day. Qualified staff will help them, for example, with problems at school, in family relationships or with peers.
“We will offer regular development activities (art, sports and music), tutoring and help with preparation for school, talking about difficulties, active and meaningful leisure time,” said Petr Bruna, director of the YMCA Prague.
What is the YMCA? The oldest and most widespread youth organization in the world was founded in London in 1844. It is based on Christian values, but is open to all people without distinction. Today, the YMCA operates in 119 countries and has over 58 million members. It spread widespread in our country during the First Republic. It was forced to cease its activities in 1951. In 1968, unsuccessful attempts were made to re-establish it, which eventually took place in 1990.
