Prague wants to limit the passage through the center for non-residents
“We want to shine light on traffic that does not have the destination of its journey in the center and only shortens its journey here,” Scheinherr told the News about the concept, which was approved by the city council on Friday.
Only residents of the city districts of Prague 1, 2 and 5 could pass through the area without any problems. , “He added.
The city administration would like to limit the entry of cars with the help of cameras that would monitor the license plates. Such are already on Malostranské and Křižovnické squares.
According to Scheinherr, the new transport regime could start operating in the autumn, when construction work began at the Karlovy Lázně and Národní divadlo stops.
Nacher: We lack alternative routes
Opposition MP and MP Patrik Nacher (YES) admitted that I understood the proposed adjustments to relieve the center in the long run. But he criticizes the timing of change. First, according to him, it is necessary to move the construction of alternative routes.
“I have a feeling that such a coalition lives monothematically only by various restrictions, blockages and inconveniences of traffic for motorists, but it falls out of the priority, which is the completion of the internal circuit,” he told Novinky.
It follows from the plan that the measures could affect, for example, passengers from Letná, Holešovice or Karlín to Smíchov. Nacher pointed out that residents of more distant parts of the affected city districts will also suffer.
“Traffic acts like water – if you block one road, it will move somewhere else,” he added.
With the restriction of passage through the center, the city does not come for the first time. It tested it in connection with repairs at the end of 2019. Even then, it garnered criticism from the opposition.
The municipality defended itself by speeding up traffic and last year banned the left turn from the Legion Bridge to Smetana’s embankment. At the same time, he allowed the adjacent restaurants to build front gardens on site.
Residents of Divadelní and Karolíny Světlé streets, through which people go around the stop, but still complain about the increase in traffic on their streets.
Scheinherr noted that due to traffic restrictions on the Legion Bridge, fewer cars could be on these streets due to pride.
