The low-threshold center U Bulhara has been operating in the center of Prague for fifteen years. It is now in danger of extinction iROZHLAS
Hundreds of homeless people use the low-threshold day center at the busy Prague crossroads U Bulhara every day. Facilities near Central Station have been available to them for 15 years. It was originally created as a temporary solution, but the city is continuously renewing contracts with Naděje organizations. And he is going to do it again this year. But the locals and the town hall of Prague 1 do not like that.

“We bathe here, sometimes when we are hungry, we have bread and bread, and we are here in the warmth, at least,” says Tomáš, 35, a client of the U Bulhara center.
He is sitting at a table in rooms with about fifteen other clients. They come here regularly and can’t imagine the center not working.

“You have very little of that Hope here, certainly in the center, for how many people there are. It’s lucky when we hit that it’s just free, “adds Tomáš.
The low-threshold center is built of cells and a bit hidden directly under the busy highway.
The fact that it is important for homeless people is also confirmed by the director of the Naděje branch, Daniel Svoboda.
“The low-threshold center is a place of comprehensive help for the homeless. Offering social counseling, if someone is in a difficult situation, then it is hygiene and material assistance. And thirdly, we provide the care of a general practitioner, dentist and gynecologist. It is actually the only health center that provides comprehensive care in Prague, “Svoboda for now.
According to him, the abolition of the center would cause great complications. “Around 250 people come every day. In the event that the center is abolished, the people will not disappear from the center and go somewhere on the outskirts. Suddenly, people who have health problems and will not help them would be moving in the city center, “he warns.
Especially with the large capacity of the center have a long-term problem local. One of them is Monika Martínková, who lives in the house directly opposite.
“Here, the services have expanded to such an extent that the location can no longer bear it. Tireless clutter, harassment and the vision that it doesn’t end there. It’s all about creating small centers with a capacity of twenty-thirty people so that every part of the city knows those who need help, ”he says.

This would also help, according to the Councilor for Social Affairs of Prague 1, Petr Burgra from the group We, What We Live Here. Among other things, the town hall has been cooperating with Naděje organizations for many years. However, he does not see a long-term solution in the further extension of the contract.
