Prague 1: People protest against the felling of a maple near Karlovy Lázně
Prague 1 plans to pave the triangular area at the Karlovy Lázně stop, which is now grassed, according to her plans, the so-called tentacle, ie the passage of the embankment wall under the road to the Vltava, is also to be made available to citizens. A lookout pier is to be built on the river behind the passage, and in the future there will be footbridges that will allow you to walk “along the river” along the embankment.
The problem is that the plans can be realized, two trees need to be cut down. Permission to cut in the so-called Anennian triangle, as the place also says, the City Hall of Prague 1 has, according to its spokesman Petr Bidl, she was allowed to cut a total of four trees. “In the meantime, the two fell on their own due to their damage and weather conditions,” he said.
Citizens and opposition politicians from Prague 1, however, sharply opposed the felling. About 50 of them gathered on the Smetana embankment on Friday morning in the wind and rain. The assembly convened a representative of the Greens in Prague 1, Petr Kučera, and the initiator of the petition against felling, which has about 1,300 signatures. As he spoke into the megaphone, there were also shouts of “yo-yo” or “shame” towards the town hall’s intentions.
Kučera remarked that the petition does not limit itself in what is to arise on the spot, according to him, everyone can have their own opinion. “Personally, I think every park is a pity,” he added. The meeting was also attended by the mayor of Prague 1 Pavel Čižinský (Prague Sobě), who stopped the project as mayor. However, his successor Petr Hejma (STAN) restored him.
The passage belongs to the city
The leader of Prague Sobě and the brother of the extortion of Prague 1, Jan Čižinský, also came. It also bothers that part of the project is felling maple. He also added a message to the leadership of Prague 1: “Mayor Hejma, postpone it until the city decides whether it is willing to tolerate this disgrace and barbarism.” He pointed out that the passage to the river belongs to the capital and he wants the councilors to join the municipality. Already during the speakers’ speeches, however, a truck was parked behind them and the workers unloaded the fence where the work should begin.

The tentacle access project has been underway for several years. The author is the architect Marek Tichý. “The place at the end of Karolíny Světlé Street was once only a purposefully captured remnant of the soil during the completion of the regulation of the Smetana Embankment, which at the same time hid its original appearance,” he said of the plans to change the place.
She will wait
Mayor Hejma, who has previously stated that the trees intended for felling are damaged, announced in response to the protest and the petition that felling would eventually be waited. According to him, the whole space has been in unsatisfactory condition for a long time. “It is a missed opportunity in the very historical center of Prague on the banks of the Vltava with a unique genius loci. From the beginning, the aim is to bring this place a higher quality of public space, and the form of the project was welcomed by the citizens of Prague 1 during the preparatory proceedings, “he said. AThe noted that the maple should be replaced by an equally tall tree. This can also be seen in the visualizations. “In addition, there will be a dozen brand new trees,” the mayor added.
Hejma also spoke at a meeting of the capital council, which met extraordinarily on Friday due to felling. According to him, the felling will be suspended until March 26 and the possibility of an alternative solution will continue to be discussed. The felling permit is valid until March 30. “I perceive the excited debate that has started on social networks in recent days in connection with the beginning of the revitalization and access to the tent at Novotný lávka. That is why I have now decided to postpone the felling of a tree on the Smetana embankment, so that there can be room for negotiations with the representatives of the capital and the citizens, “said Hejma.
