Czech Railways will interrupt the operation of trains to Germany from the weekend
Anti-epidemic measures by the German authorities leading to the termination of the train connection from the Czech Republic to Saxony and Bavaria
Czech Railways is starting to stop the operation of all interstate trains between the Czech Republic and Germany this weekend. The measure applies to all long-distance and regional connections of ČD and their partners at all border crossings to Bavaria and Saxony. The reason is the anti-epidemic measures of the German authorities. From Sunday, the connection between Liberec and Zittau on the L7 line operated by Die Länderbahn and the GW Train Regio from Sokolov to Zwotental will also end.
The measures are valid until further notice, the exact date of resumption of operations will depend on the development of protective measures of the German side and the development of the Covid-19 disease in the Czech Republic. At the same time, the railways will strengthen parallel national long-distance lines so as to ensure sufficient capacity on existing connections.
In long-distance transport, the measure will affect the operation of the Ex5 Prague – Berlin – Hamburg / Kiel and Ex6 Prague / Pilsen – Domažlice – Munich lines, and in regional transport all Czech cross-border lines connecting the Czech Republic with Saxony and Bavaria. Long-distance traffic will be gradually reduced during Saturday, and traffic will stop completely from Sunday. Interstate regional trains will stop running on the cross-border section from Sunday, most of which will be maintained on national sections.
Public transport between the Czech Republic and Germany has not yet been completely interrupted. Flixbus bus connections from Prague to Berlin and the Lufthansa Prague – Frankfurt am Main line still remain in the system.
Traffic on the line from Liberec to Varnsdorf is returning in the spring months. In addition to Polish territory, where they do not stop, trains also pass through Germany. “Trains will continue to run, but will not stop temporarily on German territory,” said Michal Barták from the Czech representation Die Länderbahn. The restriction will also affect the cross-border connection of GW Train Regio from Sokolov to Zwotental. From Sunday, the trains will end in Kraslice.
