You won’t get any further in Prague. Thanks to the new attraction, you can discover the poles of the metropolis
“The fact that our children always took the trip as an adventurous expedition also played a role, it was not just a normal ‘let’s go for a walk in the forest’.” At each pole, we took a picture with a big sign indicating the given pole,” explains the head of the IPR Praha na blog Centers for Architecture and Urban Planning (CAMP). And because Boháč’s acquaintances on social networks reacted positively to the pictures in the family album, even before Christmas, markings using concrete pillars as a tangible destination for tourists grew in the most remote places of the metropolis.
The highway in the center, the end of the sugar factory and modernization. Why are Prague’s railway stations disappearing?
Although the public has the term pole associated primarily with the north and south poles of the planet Earth, various scientific expeditions, famous conquerors or – thanks to the Jára Cimrman Theater in Žižkov – also with the Czech Karl Němec, they are not necessarily associated with a pack of dogs pulling a sled and extreme conditions. This new attraction is determined by the cadastral border between Prague and the Central Bohemian Region.
“If you have at least a little bit of conquering and discovering blood running through your veins, all you have to do is go,” Boháč exhorts residents and visitors of the metropolis with a bit of exaggeration.
North Pole of Prague (northernmost point)
GPS: 50° 10′ 38.747″” N; 14° 31′ 36.683″””E
The column marked with the letter S is located on the southeastern edge of the village of Hovorčovice. The exact point is at the end of Veleňská street before the light of the railway crossing, closer to Hovorčovice. The North Pole was placed by IPR Praha fifteen meters on the other side of the crossing outside the track zone.
“The place is publicly accessible and offers a view of the Prague field called Čelisko and the dog shelter,” the description reads. Boháč adds that he remembered the aforementioned Cimrman’s work The Conquest of the North Pole, where the character Varlo Frištenský says: “Well, I may not understand it, but I would say for myself that I don’t see anything so extrovert here. When I compare it to our trip to Kokořín…”
The center of the metropolis is for tourists. Life there is not very attractive to Praguers
You can easily travel to the northernmost point by train to the Hovorčovice stops or by bus line 351 from the Letňany metro station. Cyclists can use routes 8100 and A27.
“The village of Líbeznice with its high-quality contemporary architecture from the architectural studios Atelier M1, Projektil or Ehl & Koumar architects, which recently completed the new site of the fire station, or the Zlatý kopec archaeological site, where the oldest settlement in our territory was documented, are worth a visit in the surrounding area. ” invites Boháč on an interesting trip.
South Pole of Prague (southernmost point)
GPS: 49° 56′ 30840″” N; 14° 23′ 44,027″”E
The South Pole is located approximately 200 meters from the northeastern edge of the village of Vrané nad Vltavou. And of all the four squares of Prague, this is the most frequented place, because the popular cycle path (A2) leads here. However, according to Boháč, the point is also the most photogenic of all: “It is surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the rocky slopes of the Zvolská homole nature reserve.”
The best way to get to the marked concrete pillar with a description is by bike along the river or by train – the Jarov railway station is nearby. IPR Prague also advises using the nearby ferry from Vrané to the village of Strnady, where a number of bus lines of the Prague Integrated Transport (PID) run. “You can complete the conquest of the southern pole of Prague by climbing the hill of Homole with picturesque views of the Vltava valley.”
Eastern Pole of Prague (easternmost point)
GPS: 50° 5′ 13.268″” N; 14° 42′ 24.435″””E
According to its creator, finding the eastern pole of Prague in the Klánovické les in the Vidrholec section a few meters from Úval will be “a bit of a struggle”. Although the post is located 50 meters east of the green tourist signs, it is located in a dense fog, which is said to complicate the accuracy of GPS navigation. “But you don’t have to worry. It’s not that easy to get lost in Klánovický les, so you can start searching without fear,” says Boháč.
Furthermore, to distract tourists, says the “father” of the application with routes outside the center of Prague
The nearest station to the easternmost point of the capital is the Úvalech station, where PID buses also go. In this case, however, a walking trip or a bike ride is more likely to be offered.
The western pole of Prague (the westernmost point)
GPS: 50° 6′ 10 787″” N; 14° 13′ 27,973″”E
The exact west pole is the only one inaccessible to the public, as it is behind the fence of the heavily guarded area of Václav Havel Airport Prague. Thus, the concrete post with the description was placed approximately 100 meters from the actual western border of the capital. A muddy field road will take you there, where you turn off the K Amazon road at the old cemetery.
The nearest public transport stops are at the Amazon company premises, the aforementioned road is also followed by cycle route 8100, which almost connects the north and west poles of Prague. “If the weather is good, you can easily observe the planes taking off from here,” Boháč entices tourists.
Have a good trip!
