Rohan Island in Prague awaits changes. The concrete plant disappears and a new park is created
One of the largest parks in Prague is being created next to the new district that is growing here. The location, which for many years was one of the most neglected, will thus become an attractive place not only for living and working, but also for relaxation.
The areas of Palmovka, Karlín and Dolní Holešovice currently lack a large public space for sports and meetings. Therefore, the capital, through the Institute of Planning and Development (IPR), will address the future shape of Rohan Island in cooperation with local actors and residents. The concept of Rohan Island also concerns the reconstruction of the Libeň Bridge.
A nature park is being created in an area of approximately half of Stromovka, so the last unresolved area in the wider city center will take on a new look. “We want to build on the history of the territory based on its history and traditions, we also expect the restoration of the island, which has lived here for centuries, although elsewhere,” describes Petr Hlaváček, Deputy Mayor for Territorial Development.
Flood protection
“Our aim is to get back to the original river landscape, and thus support human contact with the river,” he adds. In addition to the park, the area also awaits the construction of thousands of flats and administrative premises, which are being created along Rohanské nábřeží Street as part of the Rohan City project.
“The project will not only provide other recreational opportunities in the city center, expand biodiversity and restore direct contact with the river, but also protect the city from floods,” says Petr Hlubuček, Deputy Mayor for the Environment. The location has long been part of the flood protection of the city center.
“The aim of the project is to reduce the level of the Vltava during floods, and especially to slow down the proud river. We will achieve this by lowering the terrain level and creating a new bypass arm of the river. Following the landscaping, the area of the new Rohan Island between the current cycle path and the Vltava riverbed will be adapted for recreation, ”the result of Hlubuček. The project combines the water management function with the local landscape and at the same time brings free time to Prague residents.
The end of the concrete plant?
A concrete plant belonging to TBG Metrostav, including the route received, currently stands as a temporary construction in the locality. After that, the mixers are constantly “commuting”, complicating the operation on the Rohanské nábřeží and burdening the environment.
The representatives of Prague 8 therefore demand that the Prague City Hall do not take any steps that would lead to the extension of the building permit, or the extension of the period for temporary construction and the extension of leases for land where the concrete plant and related buildings are located.
“In such a progressively developing area, the concrete plant no longer has space. There is a very fast-growing residential area, where there will be thousands of flats, together with a rest area and available concrete plant function is no longer suitable. It is perceived negatively by people,” of the Capital City of Prague Radomír Nepil.
“The resolution is a stimulus for the capital. The steps we have taken, we have exhausted our possibilities. We are now waiting for what approach Prague will choose. Our idea is that the concrete plant and other related temporary buildings will be removed by the end of 2021, “adds the councilor of Prague 8, Tomáš Slabihoudek.
