Prague will extend the closure of Smetana’s embankment for the second time. Restrictions according to the municipality benefit transport iROZHLAS
For over half a year, drivers in Prague will not drive through parts of the Smetana embankment in the city center. The management of Prague had the roughly 200-meter section closed for cars in one direction at the end of May. Originally temporary, just before Christmas, but the end of the deadline has postponed for the second time. According to the municipality, the data benefit both individual and public transport. However, the appearance of the restrictions has bothered the City Hall of Prague 1 from the very beginning.

Cars along the Smetana embankment in the direction of Charles Bridge will not pass between Divadelní Street and the intersection at Legion Bridge. This is what benefits the deadline the most.
Prague will extend the closure of part of the Smetana embankment. Listen to a report by Adam Bejšovec
“The intersection is complicated, there are trams and cars in all directions. As the left turn-off from the Bridge of the Legions disappears, the intersection becomes more capacitive. The passage for cars comes out about five seconds faster. The main benefit is for smooth transport, “says Adam Scheinherr, Deputy Minister for Transport from the Prague Sobě group, for Radiožurnál.
According to city data, the change at the crossroads is also beneficial for trams. “Passing city-wide routes, which carry up to 86,000 passengers a day, have accelerated the passage by just over thirty seconds on average due to the lack of left turns,” explains Scheinherr.
In the past, the closure was criticized by Prague 1, opposition representatives, but also by some coalition politicians. Scheinherr allegedly discussed the extension with them, and the city district knew about it. “We discussed the situation with Prague 1, I informed everything. We met them and lifted the ban on turning from Národní třída to Masaryk embankment, which the locals have been asking for for a long time, “he adds.
A new cultural scene?
Workers on the waterfront widened the sidewalks in the summer, local businessmen also built restaurant gardens there, and the space is to serve the public. The Mayor of Prague 1 Petr Hejma from the group We, who live here, say that such use does not make sense in the long run.

„To nevychází od lidí, kteří tam žijí. Je to provizor. Nábřeží nebude nikdy fungovat jako nějaká multi-kulti scéna, máme tam Slovanský ostrov, Žofín, piazzettu Václava Havla. Pořád se tam konají kulturní akce a my nerozumíme tomu, proč by zrovna na tomhle místě měla být importovaná další kultura,“ míní Hejma.
Městská část by místo uzavřeného nábřeží chtěla před budovou FAMU vybudovat podchod k řece a lávku ke Karlovým lázním
„To pak řeší komplexně celé nábřeží. Může tu být nějaká scéna, ale není to u tramvaje a u silnice. Určitě je dobře zklidňovat dopravu v centru, zamezit zbytnému tranzitu. Ale rozumným způsobem a po dohodě s námi. My jsme ti, kteří území spravují,“ dodává Petr Hejma.
Uzavírka měla skončit společně s rokem 2020, prodloužení by podle Scheinherra mělo platit dalších šest měsíců.
