We thank all those who requested and sent their proposal, and the Prague Zoo for the editors. We have assigned the names of the first names to the selected names. The Prague Zoo will contact them with the prize. Congratulations. |
The name Gemi refers to difficult times and modest lifestyles, and other suggested and top 10 selected names come mostly from Indonesian: Pintar means smart, Harto is treasure, Batu is a term for stone, Joyo means victory and success, Laki means boy or men, Nari is strong and persistent, and Liburan means holiday, thus referring again to the birth of a cub on a festive and significant day: November 17, 2020.
Terry’s proposal was made in honor of English writer Terry Pratchett, who was committed to protecting orangutans. Pustakawan (which means Librarian in Indonesian) is the name of perhaps the most famous orangutan, a character from Terry Pratchett’s pen from the Earth saga.
It was this name that eventually won out among all the designs, with breeders using its shortened version Kawi. “The born male is the third and very rare orangutan cub that was born in the Prague Zoo. He is the first grandchild in the line of orangutans who came to the Prague Zoo first and still came from the wild. This is important because the Sumatran orangutan is one of the most endangered species, it lives only in the north of the island of Sumatra and in the whole of Europe it is bred by only about thirty zoos, “said Pavel Brandl, curator of mammals at the Prague Zoo.
When Kawi was only two days old, she managed to make this video:
And he described how difficult it was for breeders. They have to choose names for their reared pups, which have not yet appeared in any species in the breeding of zoos, and they should also have a connection with the given species. Therefore, in the end, Pustakawan won, in an abbreviated version of Kawi. It is also suitable for the name of the seven-year-old sister Diri, with whom the orangutan grate will grow up.
Due to the fact that the Prague Zoo will be closed again due to the government’s anti-coronavirus measure from Friday, December 18, it is not clear when visitors will see the animals in Prague’s Troja live. Not only Kawi, but also other cubs born this year marked by a covid pandemic.
Among other things, the forced measures for the Prague Zoo have already meant huge losses in the tens of millions. “I would like to thank everyone who is trying to help the Prague Zoo in these difficult times, we appreciate it very much. Whether it is compensation from the Prague City Hall or donations from supporters, who have various forms, “said Miroslav Bobek, director of the Prague Zoo, online.
