On Saturday afternoon, hundreds of people demonstrated in the center of Helsinki in front of the Parliament building, demanding Finland’s departure from the EU.
The protesters also demanded the resignation of the current government.
The speaker at the Fixit demonstration was a Member of the European Parliament of the Fundamental Finns Laura Huhtasaarihis fellow MP Mauri Peltokangasand former party member Ano Turtiainenwhich currently forms its own group in parliament.
The Helsinki police said that the demonstrators did not observe safety distances and that safety practices were not fully implemented. They added that they reminded the event organizers of the safety instructions given by the Regional Administration Agency (Avi) regarding public gatherings and urged them to correct the deficiencies.
According to Avi, safety distances and hygiene practices must be followed in public events and general meetings of the University of Helsinki Hospital District (HUS) with more than 20 people to prevent the possible spread of coronavirus infections.
The agency’s latest measure banning all public events and gatherings of more than ten people will take effect from Monday.
At the same time, a separate demonstration was organized near the parliament building on Mannerheimintie, which, according to the police’s estimate, included about a hundred cars. The participants opposed the fuel tax increase.
