Prague – The Prague City Hall has completed a study of the promenade with a park planned to replace the railway line between Vršovice and Zahradní Město, which will cease to function after the modernization of the corridor. As Deputy Mayor Adam Scheinherr (Prague himself) told reporters, construction could begin in 2022 and end two years later and cost 200 to 300 million crowns. A similar project is planned for the modernization of the route to the airport and Kladno. The new four-track railway line from Vršovice to Zahradní Město will probably be put into operation on 13 December.
According to information from the municipality, the line through Strašnice stops will cease to function in December, when it will be replaced by a newly built four-track corridor with new leading stops Eden and Zahradní Město. According to Scheinherr, the new promenade is intended for walks and recreation and at the same time to connect Vršovice and Strašnice for pedestrians and cyclists. The deputy stated that the municipality already has documentation for the zoning decision, which it will apply for. The city plans to change the necessary land with the Railway Administration (SŽ) for another.
The promenade will consist of two lanes, one four meters wide for cyclists and skaters and the other with a width of 3.2 meters for pedestrians. Between them will be less than a meter of greenery, tartan or the original tracks. Other railway elements will be preserved on the promenade. “Along the way, you will see the original part of the track, lighting towers, sleepers and traffic lights. Along the promenade will remain a historic stone underpass from the 19th century, a riveted bridge from 1918 or a footbridge at the Prague – Strašnice stop from the 1930s from the second half of the 20th century, “said Scheinherr.
The architect and main coordinator of the study, Tomáš Cach, added that the footbridge will include three footbridges, at the new railway station in Eden, at V Korytech Street and the largest across Průběžná Street. There will be several places on the promenade in the surrounding park, such as at Botič, at the Vlasta housing estate, at Eden at the site of the canceled Strašnice stop or with a view of the Garden City.
According to Scheinherr, the municipality is also considering a similar project as part of the planned modernization of the runway at the airport. “The current railway body of the railway in Kladno will be abandoned and thus a project, which we call the Kladno railway, should be created,” he explained. He added that in this case there will not be as much space available as in Strašnice, so it will be more of a path for pedestrians and cyclists without the surrounding park, although there will also be places for recreation there as well.
The new line from Vršovice to Zahradní Město will start operating in December
The new four-track railway line from Vršovice to Zahradní Město, built by the Railway Administration (SŽ) during the modernization of the line from the main railway station to Hostivař, will most likely be put into operation on 13 December. Simultaneously with its launch, the trains will stop running on the existing tracks through Strašnice, and the local stop will also cease to exist. SŽ spokeswoman Radka Pistoriusová told ČTK.
“Everything is aimed at the fact that the operation in the new section of the line will start from the validity of the new timetable, ie from Sunday, December 13. There will also be a new stop Prague-Eden, where trains will stop from this day,” said the spokeswoman.
By putting the new section into operation, on the other hand, the line through Strašnice with a stop where trains have been running since the 19th century will cease to function.
The corridor under construction between the main railway station and Hostivař is connected to the already completed reconstruction of the Prague-Hostivař railway station. Construction began in August 2018 and, according to the latest information, is about two-thirds. As part of the project, the Vršovice railway station will be completely reconstructed and two new stops will be created in Prague – Eden and Prague – Zahradní Město. The project will cost 5.4 billion crowns, more than 80 percent is to be financed from European funds.
