NASA-NOAA Finland’s nuclear power plant satellite finds tropical storm Noul fading over Laos

Tropical storm Noul landed in central Vietnam on September 17, and NASA-NOAA’s Finland NPP satellite took a picture of the storm over Laos. Noul weakened as it moved towards Thailand, where it is predicted to disintegrate.
The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) reported that the system landed north of Hue, Vietnam at approximately 0100 UTC on 18 September (21:00 EDT on 17 September) and had begun to monitor inland.
On September 18, at 3 a.m. EDT (0700 UTC / 2:00 p.m. Vietnam Local Time), the VIIRS instrument from the Finnish nuclear power plant satellite provided a visible view of Nouli as it moved to Thailand. The storm seemed shapeless and the shallow center was difficult to find. Deep convection masks the low-level orbit that has followed the hinterland and is located above Laos.
By 5:00 a.m. EDT (0900 UTC), the JTWC released the latest bulletin about the storm. At that time, Tropical Storm Noul was located near latitude 16.4 degrees north and longitude 104.4 degrees east, about 174 nautical miles west of Da Nang, Vietnam, and above Laos. It moved west and had a maximum continuous wind speed of 40 knots (46 mph / 74 kmph).
Noul is now disintegrating as it moves to Thailand.
NASA is investigating tropical cyclones
Hurricanes / tropical cyclones are the strongest weather phenomena on earth. NASA’s space and scientific research expertise contributes to essential services provided to Americans by other federal agencies, such as hurricane weather forecasts.
For more than five decades, NASA has used the space perspective to understand and explore our home planet, improve our lives, and secure our future. NASA combines technology, science, and unique global Earth observations to deliver societal benefits and strengthen our nation. Increasing knowledge of our home planet directly contributes to American leadership in space and scientific research.
