The Museum of the City of Prague in Florence is closing, a major reconstruction awaits it

Sugar Mizzy June 14, 2020

“The aim of the comprehensive interior renovation is to modify the building to create a modern museum in a beautiful historic building with everything that goes with it. The exhibition halls will be ready to install new exhibitions and exhibitions using current technologies. barrier-free access, “said museum director Zuzana Strnadová in a press release.

The main building of the Museum of the Capital City of Prague was built in 1896–1898 according to the design of architect Antonín Balšánek; it was ceremoniously opened to the public together with the expositions on September 27, 1900. In 120 years, it should not have undergone any major reconstruction. Only partial modifications were made to it
mainly of a technical nature.

Its overall general reconstruction has been in preparation since 2004, including plans first for the completion and then for the construction of a new museum building near the existing one. In 2012, only the overall renovation of the facades was completed, including the restoration of plastic elements.

The elevator will arrange accessibility

After 120 years, it is necessary to comprehensively renovate the interiors, even with technical and safety equipment that is already at the end of its service life. The reconstruction of the interiors will also include the installation of an elevator in the building, which will make the whole room fully barrier-free. The facilities for visitors will be newly deployed and modified – the box office, cloakroom, museum shop and toilets.

Approximately 578 collection items from the museum’s historical collections and 744 archaeological exhibits are waiting to be moved. At the same time, artistic and craft elements that are part of the museum building will be protected, such as painted ceilings from the U Císařských houses on Wenceslas Square or from Egg Market (today’s Rytířská Street) or from the Cyriac Monastery in the Old Town.

On the occasion of the 15th anniversary celebrations, Google Map captured the company in the Czech Republic on the premises of the reconstructed National Museum for Street View.

The reconstruction of the interiors of the main building will take place according to the architectural project of the SGLPROJEKT studio under the supervision of the monument care staff, as the building is a registered cultural monument. The implementation will be entrusted to a company that will be selected in the current competition. A team of museum employees and external collaborators will oversee this demanding implementation.

“The renovated building opens a large unique exhibition of the decomposed Langweil model of Prague using modern audiovisual technologies and interactive elements. The results of a research project focused on the use of Langweil’s model of Prague in teaching, which was launched this year. the exhibit is planned by the director.

The model of Prague will be stored in a sarcophagus

The opportunity to see it in disassembled form is every few decades. It is also interesting that Langweil’s model of Prague will not leave the building even during the reconstruction. A special cover will be made for him, a kind of sarcophagus, so that it will not be damaged. At the same time, there will be other models of Prague for years – from historical to contemporary. New exhibitions on the history of Prague, which we are already preparing, will be gradually opened.

“Reconstruction of the interiors of the main building will undoubtedly be challenging. But I believe that thanks to this beautiful neo-renaissance building we will be able to return to its original luster, which it gradually lost. And I will personally be pleased to be one of the most recently renovated historic museum buildings in the last few years, ”adds Strnadová.

The exhibition in Prague maps the history and transformation of the surroundings of the National Museum and Čelakovského sady.

The National Museum attracted thanks to the historic building. Youth will have free entry
