PRAGUE

Melanie Martinez brought a perfectly developed exhibition to the Karlín Forum

Sugar Mizzy February 4, 2020

Over and over again. Melanie Martinez returned to Prague after three years, this time without an unpleasant illness, on the contrary with rich decoration. But it wasn’t some cheap tinsel, because the singer is a real worker. Thus, not only the decoration raised the whole evening by several levels. Let’s take a closer look at her performance.

Live: Melanie Martinez

place: Forum Karlín, Prague
date: February 3, 2020
Support: Naaz
setlist: Bikes on the bus, Class fight, Director, Show & Tell, Sisters’ office, Drama club, Strawberry pie, Friends of lunch, Orange juice, Detention, Teacher’s pet, High school sweethearts, Break, Crazy hatter, Alphabet, Fire drill

The talented Naaz was given the task of warming up the audience. The young musician, whom some may have known from last year’s Tove Lo concert, once again performed a contagious animal. And he visited her and received them unexpectedly well. Mobile phones signify a completely bright hall for the front jumper another success. Since last concert, the EP “Do You?” Has been released, of which more average pieces are “Do You?” remelted in a very strong moment. A pleasant half hour.

Many may report that the album season is over and that it pays for the performers to release the best singles. Of course, no one knows how this trend will develop, but some others will certainly not give up the area that the board offers. And we’re not just talking about music veterans, but their younger colleagues. But Melanie Martinez takes all this even more seriously. With her debut “Cry Baby”, she created her own, slightly perverted universe, which she developed with the successor “K-12”. Yes, the album means a lot to the singer – maybe that’s why the setlist copied the songs exactly as we find them on the record. Let’s say it out loud: her first performance in Prague was not good, mainly because of an illness that turned her otherwise pleasant voice into a circular saw. Mel arrived at the Karlín Forum, which is about three times larger, in significantly better form, although she often missed it a lot. While the “Sister’s Office” added to the song’s hystericality in the drama, in the final “Recess”, carried at a calm pace, its fairytale atmosphere, on the other hand, removed.

But! The main star of the evening can hardly be read. For this tour, she has prepared a well-thought-out show, which would be great for a theater. Seriously, not even the O2 arena sees so many props and costumes. Richly it would be enough, the musician concert if there were only six excellent dancers, but she prepared a stage choreography with a hospital bed, tied by hands in a large playing box, for a while she performed as a puppet, during “Strawberry Shortcake” it became a three-meter cake. A dancing group in red costumes began to climb out from under her dress in the middle of the song. Their somersaults, walking hands and other admirable maneuvers ensured one of the strongest moments of the evening. Melanie curled up in rhythm above them, adding raised middlemen to her movements at the end. No, the “K-12 tour” for children is not. Like its author, the audience got a little old, so this time she didn’t have to arrive with her parents and properly hacked her idol during the evening.

However, this perfectionism required less sacrifice. Before each setlist item, the podium was prepared for the next piece for about two to three minutes. It wasn’t like nothing was happening at all, seven instructional videos appeared on the screen, the harp occasionally sounded or the dance crew rejoined. This probably belongs to the magnificent experience, but the disrupted pace froze a bit. The performance also affected the olfactory senses three times. For example, “Orange Juice” oranges rang throughout the hall. A refreshing idea, but what was it like to stand right under the blowpipes?

In the additional part, there was a previously unreleased piece of “Fire Drill”, loved by fans of “Mad Hatter” and “Alphabet Boy”. It is paradoxical that although Melanie Martinez spoke to people even less than before, her actions seemed more honest. She revealed that she would love to return to Prague. It wasn’t sold out, so hopefully next time. It is extremely fun to explore the “Cry Baby” universe.
