LENKA TREŠLOVÁ, certified doula of the Czech Dul Association, advises:
My current tip for the Prague maternity hospital is Bulovka. New, since prof. Lectured by MUDr. Michal Zikán, Ph.D. D., a lot has changed here. In February 2019, the Midwifery Center (CPA) was established, where respect for parents’ wishes, support for natural childbirth and an individual approach are a matter of course. The woman is cared for exclusively by a midwife, a doctor only in case of complications, either in antenatal clinics or directly at the birth.
In addition, there is the possibility to order a specific midwife for childbirth, which is of course a paid service, but relatively cheap – now in the beginning. I highly recommend this to my clients. The woman is cared for during the birth by “her” midwife (PA), whom she knows from antenatal clinics, PA knows the mother, her wishes and preferences. Everything is still in its infancy, but my experience of being accompanied by a mother to a CPA is very good. The refusal to provide a vein was respected, the woman could choose the position to displace the baby according to her feelings, refusal to use oxytocin after delivery was not a problem, more bleeding was observed in the woman, and this was normal, so oxytocin did not need to be administered. The doctors were very nice, with whom it was possible to arrange everything in advance directly at the birth, including the undisturbed contact of the baby with the mother immediately after the birth.
The baby is monitored by a sensor glued to the hand, its oxygenation and heart rate are monitored. Under these conditions, she can stay on her mother’s womb, crawl to her breast if her mother wishes, and cuddle for two hours after giving birth, when her mother stays in the delivery room. Also the approach of prof. Gypsyism for women after caesarean section (CS) is very non-standard in Prague maternity hospitals.
A woman after CS is offered the opportunity to move to an above-standard room after the operation, provided that her partner stays as a caregiver for the baby. The mother does not have to be separated from the baby, skin-to-skin contact can take place in the above-standard room with the help of the child’s father, the woman is cared for here in the same way as in the ICU.
Martina gave birth in Na Bulovce in Prague
(daughter Marianna, 3 months)
Marianna was born at 8.35 in the morning, 10 minutes after the water burst, about 25 minutes after arriving at the maternity hospital. I grabbed it myself as it rolled out (I gave birth on my knees, my hands resting on the raised front of the bed) and immediately put it on my stomach. What did I like about Bulovka? Absolutely respectful approach of a midwife. She agreed with everything, nothing was a problem, although the current practice had to be different (Apgar measurements usually take place in a crib next to my parents, I measured on my body on request and they did not take little Marianna from me at all).
It was good that I went through my midwife with another midwife during the regular check-up, and she gave me a comment on what is not a problem, what is done differently for them, and advised me on what would be good in time. the maternity staff to inform the birth itself. I liked that I put the little one on my stomach and no one took it from me, they just covered us in peace. Nobody told us what to do, they asked me everything I wanted.
