One of the highlights of autumn and a symbol of tourism in the town of Hrvatska Kostajnica, begins this month.
The Chestnut Festival of Hrvatska Kostajnica is being held for the 22nd year in a row this weekend from 11.-13. October 2019. The festival, locally known as Kestenijada, is a celebration of the harvesting of chestnuts on the surrounding hills and forests.
Hrvatska Kostajnica, a small town located on the left bank of the Una river, got its name from the surrounding forests, which are rich in chestnut forests.
There are numerous attractions at the weekend festival that gathers people from all over Croatia and the region, including tasting traditional chestnut specialties, participating in the harvest, concerts, tours and lots of entertainment for all ages.
Chestnuts have become the most important tourist product of Hrvatska Kostajnica, and the town has a brand that no other town in Croatia has, thanks to its chestnuts.
As every year, there will be a train from Zagreb to the festival. The train departs from the Zagreb station (8 hours) and stops in Buzin, Velika Gorica, Lekenik, Sisak and Sunja.
