How to turn Victory Square? Prague will have a study done
The results of the architectural and urban planning competition were published by the previous management of the metropolis, headed by Mayor Adriana Krnáčová (YES). The expert jury chose the authors Pavel Hnilička, Eva Macáková and Josef Filip as the best project. Vítězné náměstí was established in 1925 and now several busy roads flow into it – Evropská, Čs. armies, Yugoslav guerrillas, St. Vitus and Dejvicka.
“The proposal is based on the legacy of prof. (Antonín) Engel, the author of the urban design of Dejvice, and his vision of building cities strongly influenced by the reconstruction of Paris and other later magnificent urban plans of the 19th century. The basic idea of the proposed modification of the still unfinished square is to release its center by moving the tram and car traffic. The free center can be filled with many different activities, such as markets, public gatherings, the start and finish of the race, etc. The value of public space lies in its universality, “he writes about the IPR Prague revitalization project.
The more accessible heart of “Kulaťák”
In the design of Pavel Hnilička Architekti’s studio, for example, the tram line no longer crosses the square, but the center now goes around its western side (at Evropská Street). Trees are to be planted around the inner part of Victory Square, separating them from the road – the roundabout is to have three new lanes.
Victory Square will open to the people. Prague has a winning proposal for its transformation!
In the middle of the square will be an obelisk, which was also in the original Engel’s plans. The heart of “Kulaťák” should be more accessible to people, because pedestrians will get here thanks to the new exit from the subway and crossings. The monument to foreign soldiers of the Second World War will be moved to Technická Street after the reconstruction.
Negotiations with 60 subjects
The municipality estimates that the transformation of Victory Square (between 1952 and 1990 was called the October Revolution) will cost half a billion crowns. The councilors opted for the conceptual study because this level of project documentation addresses a large amount of detail beyond the normally processed phase of the study project documentation. According to spokesman Vít Hofman, the plans need to be discussed with more than sixty entities and, if necessary, their comments incorporated. It should be done by the end of next year.
“Victory Square is to become a representative place of Prague, which will serve all the inhabitants of the metropolis well. From the conceptual study, we expect not only transport solutions, but above all support for all the basic functions of the square – residential, social or representative functions. For example, we expect a pedestrian zone towards the main axis of the university campus, with popular water features, new works of art and noise reduction in the area, “said the mayor’s deputy for territorial development Petr Hlaváček (United Forces for Prague / TOP 09).
