The Industrial Palace will regain its burnt wing, Prague has permission to repair it
The reconstruction envisages the construction of the left wing, which was destroyed by fire in 2008, and the construction of facilities, technical space and an underpass to Křižík’s fountain.
According to earlier information, the estimated cost of the reconstruction is about 1.25 billion crowns. The overall reconstruction and construction of monuments from the end of the 19th century was approved by the previous management of the municipality. Before the closure of the palace, the city makes adjustments to the lower part of the Exhibition Center.
“We did not want the Exhibition Grounds to completely close to the people of Prague due to the reconstruction of the Industrial Palace and to come to life again for a long and cumbersome time,” said the mayor’s deputy Pavel Vyhnánek (Prague Sobě), who is in charge of the complex.
He added that for this reason, the operation in the Pražan restaurant has been resumed, a rope playground for children has been created in the lower part of the Exhibition Grounds, a picnic area with an electric grill or a bistro, and a new gastronomic pavilion is being completed.
The project of modifying the palace tries to preserve the existing form of the building as much as possible, which is based on the original design from 1891 and the reconstruction from the early 1950s. A novelty will be the underpass under the restored left wing of the palace, which will make it possible to get to Křižík’s fountain from the entrance or from the foyer. According to Vyhnánek, this should better connect the upper and lower parts of the complex.
Due to the fire of 2008, Prague is still suing Incheba, which had leased the complex for a long time. The city is demanding billions in compensation for her. However, the company, now renamed Reality MK, ended up in liquidation.
The Industrial Palace was built in 1891 on the occasion of the Jubilee Provincial Exhibition designed by architect Bedřich Munzberger. From the beginning, it was used to organize exhibitions and other cultural events, although it was originally intended to be a temporary building.
