The World Hockey Championship will return to the Czech Republic in five years! The International Hockey Federation decided on this at its annual congress. She gave the right to host the World Championship to Russia (2023), Prague with Ostrava (2024) and a year later to Sweden and Denmark, which will share the World Cup.
The IIHF Congress decided to whom to assign the organization of the World Cup starting in 2023, where it is held in St. Petersburg. “We have hosted the World Hockey Championship seven times. We can always provide services to all teams and fans and ensure a high level of security, “said the President of the Russian Hockey Federation Vladislav Tretyak.
The Russians will build a brand new stadium in St. Petersburg due to the World Cup. The modern stand, which should have a capacity of around 21,500 – 23,000 seats, should become the largest hockey arena in the world. The stadium should grow within walking distance of the Park Pobědy metro station.

The matches will also be played in the Ice Palace, which is currently the home of SKA St. Petersburg hockey players. The arena was built in 2000 on the occasion of the World Cup and can hold up to 12,300 spectators.
“There is no doubt that both arenas will be sold out. The whole world is waiting and looking forward to the World Cup in St. Petersburg. In a beautiful city with hospitable and big hockey fans, “adds Treťjak for the website of the International Hockey Federation.
Year 2024? Prague and Ostrava will be seen
A year later, the world championship will return to the Czech Republic, where the world hockey championship will take place, for the third time. As in 2004 and 2015, the championship will take place in Prague and Ostrava.
It was in 2015 that a respectable attendance record was born, when a total of 741,690 fans arrived for the matches in both cities. The match was watched by an average of 11,589 spectators directly at the stadium.
A big event awaits Ostrava soon. At the turn of the year, the world junior championship takes place in the local Ostravar Arena. The second story is Třinec. Prague has hosted the World Cup since Czechoslovakia – in 1933, 1938, 1947, 1959, 1972, 1978, 1985 and 1992.
In 2025, Sweden and Denmark will co-host the World Cup, which last year hosted its first World Cup in Copenhagen and Herning.
