A large overview of nativity scenes in Prague. We will advise you where to go to see Jesus
The exhibition has been taking place in the Church of Our Lady of the Snows since the beginning of December, where a 4.5-meter-long mechanical nativity scene by Jiří Votruba or a work built according to the Třešť Nativity Scenes with historical figures measuring 3×2.5 meters can be seen. You can also admire the more than two-hundred-year tradition of nativity scenes from Třešť in the Jindřišská Tower. Here you will see hand-carved nativity scenes, including a large one, almost nine meters long, which is made up of three different ones.
In the Bethlehem Chapel you will find mechanical nativity scenes as part of the Playful Christmas exhibition, where there are also many different toys. The exposition, where there are not only nativity scenes, can also be found in Chvalský chateau, where life in the countryside more than years ago in the holiday season is reminiscent of the Old Bohemian Christmas exhibition. In the Charles Bridge Museum you will see a life-size straw nativity scene, an ebony African nativity scene, but also a Vltava fish nativity scene registered in the Czech Book of Records. Loreta has a famous nativity scene with about fifty figures in almost life size.
If you visit the Baby Jesus of Prague, you will already see a large board painted nativity scene outside, another modern one is inside. In the church museum there are nativity scenes from all over the world, for example from Canada or the Philippines.
The Senate Exhibition Hall also offers visitors creations from the Czech Republic and around the world, such as Mexico and Germany. Contemporary nativity scenes will surprise you with the variety of materials used, they are made of wood, corn husk, glass, stone or ceramics. Those interested will also see a mechanical piece with twenty moving figures. Over two walls of exhibits made of different materials from different countries of the world will be on display at the Jan Kepler Grammar School. You will see, for example, nativity scenes from Malta, China, Peru or Kenya. An unusual gingerbread nativity scene with 250 figures will be exhibited in the Church of St. Matthew.
The Bethlehem 2018 project offers a view of various mangers in many church buildings throughout the metropolis. Most of them will show up for the first time on Monday, December 24. You can see the nativity scenes, for example, in the church of St. Ignatius, in the Basilica of St. Peter and Paul in Vyšehrad, but also in the Týn Church.
In the church of St. Josef, the Holy Family is located in a hut, in the Church of the Sacred Heart of the Lord on Jiřího z Poděbrad Square again in a cave. Nativity scene in the church of St. Jakub Starší in Petrovice dates from the beginning of this century. It is from photographs and consists of about 600 characters.
Already this weekend (both days from 1 pm to 6 pm) an exhibition of nativity scenes will take place in the clubhouse of the Model Club in Lipence.
