Kimi Taylor’s perfect day in Reykjavík
When she’s not ballooning or riding around Reykjavík on her tricked-out bicycle, comedian, artist and self-proclaimed “Aspiring Power Lesbian” Kimi Tayler told us how she’d spend her perfect day in Reykjavík.
For brunch
If I’m not scarfing down crumpets smuggled from my homeland and washed down with a cup of English breakfast—you have to remember your roots—I go to Kaffi Laugalæk. Their weekend brunches are delicious and I love the pickled chilli. If you like things spicy, ask them to sprinkle it liberally and gayly! Like a hobbit, I often need another breakfast and my morning snack is a warm cinnamon bun from Brauð & Co. with a latte from Reykjavík Roasters.
In the mornings
Obviously, on a perfect day, the weather will be great, so I’d jump on my trusty bike friend, Barbara Kynast, and ride around the city. There are lots of paths around and I like to pack a picnic lunch, plug in a podcast (I recommend ‘Icetralia’) and set off along the coast. There are a few steep hills in the town centre, but that comes when you hurtle back down Laugavegur, ring the bell and avoid the tourists.
In the afternoon
Being an art student, I enjoy both window shopping and freebies. One of my favorite places to do this is the Coal Gate, where I can both browse the curiosities and sample the sweet treats. After that I started to waste the rest of the afternoon in art galleries. I really like the vibrant culture of artist-run spaces so I’d check out who’s showing at Ekkisens and Harbinger.
For dinner
I’m not vegan, but I can honestly say that the newly opened Veganæs not only sells the best burgers in the city, but I almost cried when I finished the Brennda sandwich because I was so sad it was gone. I don’t know if it’s magic or crack, but they sure are working some magic.
Late at night
I performed regularly with comedy group Golden Gang and started a monthly show called ‘Jokes In-Between’, so whatever the night, there’s going to be stand-up. Few things make me happier than performing with and watching the funniest rabbits in town at Gaukn and Leynikkjalaran. To end the night, I would go to Kiki’s for a little lip sync: a real lesbian pastime. I’ve mastered this mystical art not only to trade interpretive dance for a free shot of Jäger, but because it gives me the opportunity to combine some of my biggest passions: drag, the need for attention and an unholy obsession with Eurovision.
