There will be no World Press Photo in Prague. Money is missing
The Czech organizers of World Press Photo, which has been held regularly in the Czech Republic since 2002, announced this fact on the event’s Facebook page without further justification. After that, they canceled the website and no longer communicate.
The reason is a lack of funds. “This year will not be in Prague, because the organizer did not raise sufficient funds. But we are looking for partners for the coming years, “said Babette Warendorf, curator and exhibition manager from the central competition department in Amsterdam, when asked about the E15 daily. However, it is not known how much the organization of exhibitions costs.
The variant is that the next year will be organized by Veronika Souralová. It has been running the Czech branch of the competition for the second year in a row. “It would make sense to run both competitions. But this year we are already busy due to the introduction of the new Czech Nature Photo format and we would not be able to organize the exhibition. We will think very seriously about next year, “said Souralová.
The prestigious World Press Photo competition is the largest reportage photography platform, which was established in 1955 in the Netherlands. The number of submitted films and their authors increases every year.
Over five thousand photographers from 125 countries with more than eighty thousand photographs entered the 2017 year. The competition reflects last year’s world themes. The exhibition is currently taking place in the established Westlich Photographic Gallery in Vienna and will travel to the Hungarian Museum of Ethnography in Budapest. This year, the Czech photographer Michael Hanke with his series from the chess tournament placed in the category of sports reporting.
