Prague is in the world in the number of congresses, guests spend up to three times more than ordinary tourists
The whole of the Czechia lost two positions to 27th place, but Prague remains 11th in the ranking of cities.
Prague – Prague last year remained 11th in the international ranking of cities with the largest number of large congresses. The whole of the Czechia lost two positions to 27th place. This follows from the data of the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), which was published today by the CzechTourism agency.
During the year, 156 international conferences were held in the Czech Republic, which were attended by over 57,000 delegates. The Czechia has left behind, for example, Norway, India and Russia.
Within the Visegrad Four countries, Poland performed better in 17th place, while Hungary (33rd place) and Slovakia (63rd place) fared worse. The USA remains at the top of the list with 934 congresses, followed by Germany (689 events) and the United Kingdom (582 events).
Prague, where most congresses in the Czech Republic take place, then ranked 11th in the world rankings, the same as last year. It thus surpassed metropolises such as Rome, Stockholm and Beijing. It also performed best in comparison with the V4 cities – Budapest took 16th place, Warsaw 30th and Bratislava ranked 120th in the rankings. The most popular congress cities are Paris, Vienna and Barcelona.
“Congress tourism is an important branch of tourism in the Czech Republic. The spending of delegates heading to the congress is up to three times higher than for the average tourist,” said Zdeněk Giormani, head of the Czech Convention Bureau. The average spend per delegate is about $ 2,228 (53,000 crowns). The average duration of one congress is 3.67 days.
According to data from the Czech Statistical Office, 12,589 congress events took place in domestic collective accommodation establishments last year, attended by more than 1.3 million participants. Most of them were in Prague – over 4,000 conference events, of which there were over half a million delegates.
