From Iceland — Icelandic Facebook groups: Shuttlers
Iceland has a peculiar obsession with Facebook groups. Think about it: with 320,000 inhabitants is not unreasonable for a group like “Vegan Iceland” with 13,000 members, to include ALL road trips in Iceland. Or for “TRAPLORD$$$” to have all, er, Icelandic trolls too (3,000).
There is neither Uber nor Lyft in Iceland, but the Facebook group “Shuttlers!” (“Drivers!”) proves that the desire for transportation that is not officially taxis but taxis is innate regardless of location.
The group includes 33,000 Icelanders and works like this: People with cars put their phone numbers on the site. Then people who need to get somewhere contact them. People can also post their location and where they want to go and vice versa. Simple, right?
The only downside to Shuttles! is—since it’s a Facebook group—when you post on the page, it notifies all your Facebook friends who are also members. And in small towns like Reykjavík, there are no secrets. Let’s say you’re in Kópavogur early on a Sunday morning, stuck after a one-on-one date and send in a request to return home to Skutlara! All your friends will get notified and then either think you’re a total PIMP or make fun of you for sleeping with someone from Kópavogur.
Pro tip: People also post on Shuttles! offer alcohol delivery during the hours the liquor store is closed. If you’re planning a DOPE after party but have no alcohol, this could be your savior. Disclaimer: This is illegal, but people at after parties are not known for making good decisions.
