Living cells for a crown? In Prague 9, it worked
Retired original building cells have found use in Prague 9. The city district leases them for a symbolic crown to the homeless, who have a temporary home in them. In return, he demands cooperation and order from them.

Tomáš Holeček (ODS), a local councilor for transport and the environment, came up with the project two years ago. The first eight people will leave the cell this year. At that moment, they will no longer be considered homeless, but a person who has managed to integrate into society.
There are currently 22 cells in the Nine
They move from the mobile shelter to some of the social flats, where they will pay a proper rent. Their place will be filled by new homeless people waiting in line. There is a huge interest in mobile cells among the homeless.
There are currently 22 cells in the Nine, with two homeless people living in them. “We would need more, but we are limited in land. The main concept was that homeless people are located outside the residential area and are within certain ranges. We don’t want homeless people to form groups and organize night parties together, “says Tomáš Holeček.
The costs are minimal, the effect is huge
In practice, it seems that a homeless person gets an empty cell, which I have to remember and secure. At the same time, she cleans up her surroundings and watches for anything wrong. The little girl can’t praise this procedure.

The costs are minimal, but the effect is huge. “It simply came to our notice then. The cell costs six to twelve thousand, transport by crane about the same. But if I look at it historically, for example, the disposal of black dumps cost us a million to a million eight hundred a year. Today, when these people have peripheral places under control, there are almost no landfills in our country, “says Tomáš Holeček.
So far, the cells are intended for homeless tribal people
At the same time, the city district helps homeless people find work or obtain documents. The aim of the project is to re-learn social and hygienic habits within two years. Upon completion, he should be able to return to normal life.
So far, the cells are intended for so-called tribal homeless people, which Prague 9 has historically registered. But people living on the streets in other parts of the city are also interested in them.
Prague 9 wants to continue the cell project
“I was surprised by the taste of homeless people. We have not yet encountered a clearly negative experience. We have convicted people and murderers here, but he admits absolutely perfectly, “praises the city councilor.

After a good experience with cells, Prague 9 plans to continue working with the homeless. From this year, the inhabitants of modest shelters will start guarding, for example, public car parks or central parks.
The environment commission was interested in the project
The cells at nine are so far unique, there is nothing like them anywhere else. However, representatives of some parts of the city have already come to see the experiment in person. “We have not yet decided on that, but we know about it,” says representative Vít Céza from neighboring Prague 8.
The commission for the homeless was interested in the project of cells for the homeless, in which Céza meets, but according to him, no one from the council, who would continue to implement mobile homes, agreed with that. “Capacities are recommended and there have been other projects,” at the same time.
