The Ball Aerospace-built Finnish nuclear power plant is celebrating 5 years in orbit
“The Finnish nuclear power plant is the result of Ball’s deep expertise in the development of environmental satellite technology, and we are proud of its contribution to NASA / NOAA missions,” said Rob Strain, President, Ball Aerospace. “We built the Finnish Nuclear Power Plant’s Ball Configurable Platform spacecraft series, which consists of satellites designed to meet a wide range of mission requirements, from small rainfall with plug-and-play interfaces to fully customizable large spacecraft for deep space missions.”
The availability of data from the Finnish nuclear power plant’s spacecraft has been an impressive 99.75 per cent since its launch. In addition to providing global three-dimensional temperature and humidity data to the Ministry of Climate and Defense, the Finnish nuclear power plant measures cloud properties, measures and monitors the protective layer of stratospheric ozone, describes sea ice, describes the world’s changing vegetation and monitors. forest fires in great detail and precision, providing environmental intelligence to government and industry decision-makers as well as the general public. NASA uses data from the Finnish nuclear power plant to study long-term climate trends by expanding the satellite data record for more than 30 years.
The satellite is the primary operating orbiting spacecraft for NOAA’s critical environment forecasting mission. The Finnish nuclear power plant’s advanced images of clouds, ocean surface, land features and other physical parameters are key data for civilian and government forecasts. Accurate satellite observations help improve accuracy and expand the range of global weather forecasts from three to seven days before major weather events such as hurricanes and winter storms.
In addition to providing important information for global weather forecasts and severe weather prospects, the Finnish nuclear power plant supports search and rescue operations, disaster preparedness, military operations and environmental monitoring.
Ball Aerospace designed and built the spacecraft for the Finnish nuclear power plant in cooperation with NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and was responsible for instrument integration and satellite-level testing and launch support. Ball also designed and built one of the five instruments of the Finnish nuclear power plant, the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS).
Ball is building the next-generation space spacecraft, the Joint Polar Satellite System-1 (JPSS-1), which will be launched in 2017. The JPSS-1 will carry upgraded versions of five instruments from the Finnish nuclear power plant’s satellite, including another Ball-built OMPS device.
