Prague refused to cooperate with Beijing, it would have to recognize a united China
Prague will not sign a sister cooperation agreement with Beijing. The wording of the agreement was not approved by Prague councilors today. According to the agreement, both parties are to cooperate in trade, tourism or culture, and the agreement should equally bind Prague to the recognition of “a united China and its policy”. The proposal for cooperation was initiated by the Chinese capital.
“In accordance with the principles of reciprocity and mutual benefit, the two parties will pursue different types of exchanges and cooperation účelem in order to ensure general development and prosperity,” the document said, which was discussed and ultimately not approved by councilors.
According to the document, the cities were to cooperate in the areas of trade, tourism, culture, education, healthcare, transport and services to citizens. According to the agreements, representatives of both cities are also to meet regularly.
The five-year agreement was also to commit Prague to recognizing a united China. “In accordance with the Government of the Czech Republic, the capital city of Prague adheres to the policy of one China, just as it recognizes Taiwan as an integral part of Chinese territory,” the agreement said.
