2015 has been an active year for tropical cyclones in the Northwest Pacific, as NASA-NOAA’s Finnish nuclear power plant satellite observed the 25th tropical recession.
Visible data from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument at NASA-NOAA’s Finnish nuclear power plant satellite saw Tropical Depression 25W on October 13 at 0325 (October 12 at 11:25 PM EDT). The VIIRS image showed thunderstorms intertwined around a low-level orbit and a strip south of downtown.
The Joint Typhoon Warning Center analyzed a rainfall image from NASA / JAXA Global Precipitation Measurement or GPM nuclear satellite at 1311 UTC (9/11 EDT) on October 13, 2015, and the microwave image showed a better defined low-level center and curve. thunderstorms in the western quarter of the storm.
On 13 October 2015, at 11 a.m., the EDT / 1500 UTC Tropical Depression 25W (TD25W) center was located near latitude 13.1 north and longitude 158.8 west. The storm is approximately 842 nautical miles (969 miles / 1559 km) east of the Andersen Air Force Base in Guam and is traveling west at 16 knots (18.4 mph / 29.6 kmph). The maximum continuous wind was close to 25 knots (28.7 mph / 46.3 kmph). The Joint Typhoon Warning Center expects the recession to intensify into a tropical storm by October 16, when it will be renamed Champ.
Updated forecasts for Guam are available on the National Weather Service website: http://www.prh.noaa.gov/pr/guam/.
The Joint Typhoon Warning Center forecast will take the TD25W to the west-northwest of Guam by October 16th.
