A group to teach Icelanders how to boycott products from Israel
A group of Icelanders hopes to educate the public on how to avoid buying goods from Israel.
DV reports that the group, called BDS Iceland, hopes to find out which Icelandic companies import and sell Israeli products. “BDS” in the name of the group stands for “Boycott, Sale, Penalties”.
The movement is an extension of the Facebook group “We do not buy products from Israel”, where Icelanders display Israeli products that they find on store shelves in Iceland. Sema Erla Serdar, chairman of BDS Ísland, hopes to compile and organize this information and then make it more accessible to the public.
“We have been compiling many Israeli brands,” she told reporters. “There are some big products like Soda Stream, Moroccan oil, lots of Dead Sea cosmetics and the Viber smartphone app and of course a lot of groceries. For example, dates, avocados, garlic and herbs from [the store] Nature. ”
Sema adds that those who want to boycott Israeli products can easily do so by looking for bar codes starting with the numbers 729, which indicates that the country of origin is Israel. However, she says that this code does not exist on all Israeli products, so it is necessary to register.
