Deep billions. Police are investigating the financing of the Blanka tunnel
Criminal investigators are investigating the circumstances surrounding the financing of the Blanka tunnel complex in Prague. They deal with suspicions of committing two crimes. These are allegedly amounts in the order of billions of crowns. The investigation concerns the resolution of the council last December, in which the councilor approved the so-called categorization of invoices, which already wanted to deal with the debts that Prague has to builders.
Detectives from the České Budějovice branch of the Organized Crime Unit deal with suspicions of committing a criminal offense of violating the rules of competition and a criminal offense of violating the obligation to manage other people’s property.
The city has had problems with paying the invoice for work performed for more than a year. Situation according to current city leadership it is because politicians have delegated much of their power to officials in the past. Mayor Tomáš Hudeček (TOP 09) has previously said that they thus “got rid” of responsibility for some decisions. The builders then continued to work without the billion-dollar investment being approved by the city authorities. According to TOP 09, the city is thus “balancing” on the border of the Public Procurement Act with regard to contracts for Blanca.
A debt of 1.8 billion crowns arose towards the construction company Metrostav. Prague is gradually repaying it. She should pay most of it by the end of the year. But that leaves several hundred million in invoices. Prague is deciding how to legally repay them.
The problematic and, according to many, overpriced Blanka, which is part of the city ring, has already cost Prague 27 billion. The final account should be 36 billion crowns. The municipality is planning to open it next spring of Prague. The Blanka tunnel complex is a strategic transport construction of Prague as part of the city’s inner bypass. Its construction, which began in 2007, was consecrated by the then city leadership, led by former mayor Pavel Bém (ODS).
