NASA-NOAA’s Finnish nuclear power plant satellite sees Felleng fading
NASA-NOAA’s Finland National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Finland NPP) satellite took a night view of the extratropic cyclone Felleng as it rages in a wind cut in the South Indian Ocean.
The night-time satellite image was taken with the Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on a satellite from NASA-NOAA’s Finnish Nuclear Power Plant on February 3 at 2120 UTC (23.20 local time, Indian / Antananarivo / 13.40 EST, USA) when Felleng was located south of the Mozambique Channel. The VIIRS image was created at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and showed that most of Felleng’s clouds and rainfall pushed east and southeast of the orbit as a result of a northwest vertical wind cut.
On Monday, February 4, at 6:00 AM UTC (1:00 AM EST), the Joint Typhoon Warning Center noted that Felleng had completed its extratropic transformation and that the storm’s maximum sustained winds were close to 40 knots (46 mph / 74 kmph). The center of Felleng had moved 31.1 south and 52.8 east, about 605 nautical miles (696.2 miles / 1120 km) southwest of the island of La Reunion. Felleng continued to move from south to southeast in the open waters of the South Indian Ocean, where it is expected to evaporate over the next couple of days.
The Finnish nuclear power plant operation is a bridge between NOAA and NASA’s traditional Earth observation missions and NOAA’s next-generation JPSS. For the first time, the Finnish nuclear power plant will fly with groundbreaking new ground observation equipment that JPSS will use in operational use.
